Abstract: The peel of grapefruit is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activities of peel extract hydrosol from Citrus paradisi.
Qualitative phytochemical screening of peel indicates the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, tannin, and carbohydrates.
Introduction
Citrus is one of the most consumed fruits in the world and contains a high amount of by-products which includes essential oils. It is mostly consumed fresh or used as raw materials for juice and wine. The second largest world produced citrus species is grapefruit, with an average of more than 60 million tonnes annual production.
Grapefruit has been used as a folk medicine in many countries as antibacterial, anti-fungal, aunty-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has also been used for cancer prevention, cellular regeneration, lowering cholesterol, heart health and weight loss.
The objectives of this study were to determine the phyto-chemicals composition of the grapefruit peel extract hydrosol and to determine the physico-chemical properties of the grapefruit hydrosol/aromatic water.
